In Malawi today only 11% of primary pupils can move to secondary because of a shortage of places. Of this only 4% are girls. The Mamie Martin Fund was established in 1993 by the family and friends of Mamie Martin, to advance the education of girls in secondary school, within the catchment area of the Synod of Livingstonia. The Mamie Martin Fund gives direct grants to girls in need.

A Malawian Committee was established in 1995, through which all requests for help are channeled. Since 1993, a total of over £100 000 has been sent to the Synod. This has included support for girls with individual needs such as fees, travel, clothes or medicine. Grants have also been made for text-books, educational videos, beds, solar lanterns, cookers, science and sport equipment and necessary repair and maintenance. For further financial details see our Annual Accounts.
