The remarkable Ian Baxter set out from Glasgow on May 1st to walk to Aviemore through Fortwilliam. Without a single rest day he strode with all his luggage, including camping gear, through mud, moor, bog and nice bits, completing both the West and East Highland Ways in one journey. More than once his main meal of the day was oatcakes and peanut butter, such is the emptiness of the terrain on parts of the East Highland Way in particular. He walked alone for most of the journey but was joined for two days by MMF Trustee Jean Gordon and for shorter sections by two other Trustees. He arrived in Aviemore in warm sunshine and was greeted by John and Joy Moore, friends and supporters from Midlothian. As well as raising invaluable awareness of the work of MMF, Ian’s trek has raised enough money to send five girls to school for a year in Malawi. Thanks to Ian for that amazing effort and to all those who supported him through donations or other encouragement. He is looking forward to a long rest and to sleeping in his own dry and warm bed.
